About us
About us
The Marra Project is a trans-, disabled-, and neurodivergent-led not-for-profit organisation which aims to reach and support queer, neurodiverse, and disabled people through providing sober spaces to connect the North East, particularly in Durham.
The word “marra” comes from the pitmatic dialect of Northeastern English coal mining communities, meaning your friend who always has your back; it’s the person you can rely on. At The Marra Project we want to be your marra when you need a helping hand, whether that’s a space to find like-minded people, be creative, or someone to signpost support.
Our Values
The Marra Project creates social and sober spaces that puts inclusion and equity at the forefront. We believe that kindness and compassion are essential to creating equitable environments in which people can feel safe and accepted. We are a strongly anti-racist, anti-ableist, anti-fatphobic, anti-cissexist, anti-sexist and anti-queerphobic organisation.
